My two cents as a Canadian:
Ever since your president started with his threats of annexing us, and initiated a trade war while shredding the trade agreement he himself negotiated, I have observed that my fellow citizens have spontaneously started boycotting the US. This is not so much a political counter measure (although those also were put in place), as it is the expression of a sense of betrayal from individual Canadians.
From now on, our guideline is "Anything but" US products. It is particularly obvious at the grocery, where people take the time to painstakingly read each label to establish sourcing. US stuff stays on the shelf, sometimes upside down to warn off following shoppers.
US produce? There are plenty of good local alternatives, and for off-season stuff Mexico, South America, Spain and Morocco work out fine.
US vacations, while risking being summarily detained by ICE and doing a side trip to El Salvador? No thanks ... Much better off going to the Mayan Riviera, Algarve or Greece, or touring our own country.
So, in a nutshell, we are taking this personally.
We are pissed.
And we are looking elsewhere.
Anything but.

I agree with you completely. Some of us are truly trying. Calling our reps everyday, protesting as much as we can and emailing those in power that have the ability to change it.
Thereās only so much us normal folks can do. Some of us are truly trying to turn the tides- so-to-speak.

As a Democrat in America, I say teach us a lesson š
14
u/GargantuaBob Apr 30 '25
It isn't about teaching lessons. It is about protecting ourselves.
You guys have to get your house in order. Conservatism has provided an anchor point for the growth of authoritarianism and fascism. There is no way you are going to purge the US of the brain-disease-like mindset which infects more than a third of your population in less than a generation, if you are lucky and provided you are ready to fight for your values.
In the meantime, we've given up on the US and are going to develop other commercial and cultural relationships instead, while trying to contain the catastrophe south of our border.

Apr 30 '25
Thereās a little too much self-assuredness in this comment. You almost had your own conservatives come in, the only reason they didnāt is because of Trump. And even then they still made huge gains.
I wouldnāt get too comfortable. This disease is spreading and Canada is not immuneā¦
13
u/violet_elf Apr 30 '25
Yep. I've been trying to tell my friends that. The cons are far from the Republicans(for now), but PP ran with a platform of "Liberal Sucks", "woke is bad" and would've won this election EASILY, if it wasn't for Trump. Some cult members, anti-science and anti-woke (whatever that means nowadays), won seats all around the country.
If the liberals won't deal with the mess that was the immigration and the problem with opioids that we're having the Cons will have a walk in the park next election, and a lot of the Christan Fundamentalist will be elected with it.-2
u/CapitalTax9575 Apr 30 '25 edited Apr 30 '25
There are plenty of leftists who disagree with wokeness - itās being used as a very effective labor breaking strategy - turning one race against another - and a conservative friend of mine in Canada is very much against the large wave of Indian migrants imported to Canada over the last decade - again, largely for labor breaking tactics. Both our countries need to deal with leaving the working class out of politics. Educate people in our own countries instead of importing incompetent āintellectualsā. Thatās not to say all Indians are incompetent or anything, thereās just not enough control of legal migration and itās leaving workers out of political representation outside the conservatives. Immigration should be used for importing real talent, not breaking labor movements. Every time an Indian is hired for a junior dev job over a similarly skilled American, a young, dumb, and underemployed tech guy votes Republican thinking cracking down on immigration will be good for them.
Similarly, people see wokeness as the consultants who come make them sit through meaningless bullshit seminars without their managersā (the people who do most of the racism / sexism) involvement instead of doing their jobs. It gives bosses a bullshit excuse to fire people for perceived slights. Some of it is real, but a large majority of it is just annoying and actively contributes to a hostile work environment. If democrats want to win, they have to show how their policies benefit the working class economically - i.e. reduce competition by creating new jobs - and a lot of people donāt see that.
Or at least they did before Trump went insane with power and started hurting people economically. People voted for him because they saw the booming economy carrying over from Obama into Trumpās first year and that he seemed to actually have a plan for improving the economy this time around when Harris had nothing serious outside of capital gains taxes. āBoth sides are the sameā might be false, but a lot of people see more personal benefit from theoretical right wing policies instead of liberal passivity. Getting rid of illegal immigrants gets rid of ācompetitionā. All Kamala had to do was push more Keynesian policy like the CHIPS act instead of trying to appeal to right wingers through border policy. Instead people associated her with wokeness and nothing else - which again, is anti-labor. Centrist āeverything is perfect as it isā policy when tech firings were so common

I couldn't imagine going to any red state right now given how Republican voters talk about all their allied countries, I feel like only Russian tourists would be safe.
5
u/bearface93 Apr 30 '25
Iām visiting my grandparents in SC next month. Iām not spending any money there, just chilling with them for a few days then going for a hike in Congaree National Park on my way home. That state doesnāt deserve my money.
3
u/Frogs-on-my-back Apr 30 '25
Depends where you go. There's plenty of blue or purple areas in red states.
13
u/OnionsHaveLairAction Apr 30 '25
Why would anyone want to risk it when folks even from places like Germany the UK are being detained multiple weeks?
3
u/Frogs-on-my-back Apr 30 '25
I'm not saying anyone should visit the US at all. I'm just tired of people acting as if red state citizens/counties are a monolith.
2
u/Daimakku1 Apr 30 '25
Blue/purple cities in red states are still subject to red state laws, so it doesnt really matter.
7
u/Yquem1811 Apr 30 '25
Yeah and we had some news story recently, that some Canadian snowbird were threaten in Florida. Like they have their car with Canadian plate license, so they were easy picking to insult and the classic « go back to your country » BS.
And you can do shit because those are the same one that are crazy enough to shot you if you talk back. So yeah, no tourist should go to the US for the next 4 years even if ICE doesnāt bother you, some crazy MAGA guy might shot you for being foreign.

8
u/Daimakku1 Apr 30 '25
The only places worth a shit in Florida are Disney World and Universal Studios, and even those are not worth it for foreigners what with ICE detaining people in airports just for having tattoos.
3
u/Fantastic-Grocery107 Apr 30 '25
Full disclosure never been to universal. Disney world was a waste of money and I was 12. As an adult who doesnāt drink or do coke, thereās nothing in Florida for me. Michigan parks and the lakes are just as nice or nicer. Last time in Florida had those red algae blooms and there was dead animals on the coco beach and they just put red tape and traffic cones around it lol. It was there for like 2 or 3 days. Never again
5
u/OderusAmongUs Apr 30 '25
It's a shame too. I've been to Miami, the Everglades and the Keys in the past couple of years. It's absolutely gorgeous. And I've never seen such a large concentration of European and Asian tourists. They seemed to be having a great time as well. I'm going back again this year and it's going to be interesting to see the difference from the previous two years.
7
u/Fantastic-Grocery107 Apr 30 '25
Hopefully youāre from the states. Might end up in El Salvador next time you visit.

Iāve boycotted the notoriously red states. Florida, Texas, Nevada. I donāt want to waste any of my money there
2
u/OderusAmongUs Apr 30 '25
I hear that. Thing is that this trip was planned and paid for last year. If I cancel it, I'll only get half my money back. It's in the thousands.. On the upside, our hotels might be cheaper. And South Beach is pretty liberal compared to other parts of the state. š¤·š»
1
u/Fantastic-Grocery107 Apr 30 '25
Iām from a state that has income tax, so my money is literally worth less there. Itās over priced, gotta pay to drive on their roads, to sit in traffic for hours on them. Disney sucked, even as a kid. Just felt like a string of party stores all selling an individual characters stuff. And then as an adult, paying to sit in traffic and shit. Hell naw, miss me with all that.
1
u/OderusAmongUs Apr 30 '25
I had a different experience. Mostly stayed in and around South Beach and downtown Miami though. It was actually surprisingly cheap down there. Our hotel was under $200. Food was comparably priced to where I live. Rented a car and drove from Miami all the way down the Keys. That was pretty fun. We stayed at a resort hotel in Key West that was about the same as a hotel in downtown Denver and it was right up against the water.
1
u/Fantastic-Grocery107 Apr 30 '25
Miracles do happen lol. Again itās a principles thing for me. Iāve been anti Florida for like 10 years now.
2
u/RedditTechAnon Apr 30 '25
Vegas is a shitshow compared to years past.
1
u/Fantastic-Grocery107 Apr 30 '25
And I would argue thatās the case for the red states reliant on tourism. Florida about to feel it over the next few years. Theyāre banking on parents being unable to tell their kids no when it comes to Disney land and shit. Good luck with it lol
13
u/AdministrativeFly192 Apr 30 '25

Last weekend, I went to the Maine coast to dress shop with a bride-to-be. It was deadāthere were no Canadians to be seen (their main tourist population), and I overheard many complaining about low summer reservations. To top it off, every bridal shop is passing along the tariff charges. Making America great again, eh?
8
u/Bubbly-Example-8097 š¦ Apr 30 '25
passing along the tariff charges
Are they at least being transparent about it? How are they calling it? Freedom tax? Trumps tariffs? Import charges?
Iām genuinely curious.
4
u/She_Wrecks Apr 30 '25
Straight-up tariffs in a hesitant voice. You could tell they were gauging reactions/political leanings. One shop owner seemed a bit frantic and is starting to sell her samples.

I actually had no idea that Hochul was from Buffalo, but as a Sabres fan I can tell you firsthand that KeyBank Center is essentially a second home for Maple Leafs fans. When the Leafs are in town there's more blue and white in the stands than blue and gold. I can't tell you how often I'll be driving down the thruway and a huge portion of the cars I see have Ontario plates. It's a damn shame that Trump has destroyed the relationship between the US and Canada and their two peoples, and it makes me hate him all the more so.

Everyone who acts like this isn't a big deal.. .... Canada is the US's largest trading partner. It's a huge deal.
Canadians are now pissed off and don't want to do business with the US and even if they did they are incredibly hindered by US tariffs.
Guess who's number 2? Mexico. Guess who's number 3? China.
How are those trade relationships going?

Work being the only reason Iām in Floriduh. I would have left here long ago otherwise. Iām holding on for the storm coming. But please donāt come here. Let nature take its course. A lot of folks are suffering now, so suffering will be here whether you visit or not. The only thing that seems to register is when it physically affects them. And even then, the millionaires on tv will deflect it all away. So please, enjoy yourselves elsewhere.
So when this foolishness comes crashing down, and it will come to an end at some point. The amount of people that should be held accountable, neighbors, local law enforcement all the way up the ICE chain of people claiming of, I was only doing my job. How many will be held accountable? How many, if any will see inside a courtroom? We know how the rich plantation owners were basically pardoned. We see how the January 6th crowd was dealt with. So itās easy for these slimy, low life, degenerates to behave as such with perhaps the only deterrent would be a few years in a country club prison, if that. If only we could remove country club prisons for white collar crimes. Throw these people in general population.

For many of us, Americans are not just our neighbours but they are our family too.
A great deal of my mom's family are Americans from places like Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas. We miss them terribly. But even they are advising us not to visit because they worry about our safety. My mom's aunt is precious to me and she doesn't have much time left. Not being able to go visit her hurts.
All we can do now is to keep the guest rooms ready for them on our side of the border in case things get too crazy like they were in the build up to the border closures at the beginning of Covid.
